Welcome to Debbie’s Dish, where I hope you will be enticed to spend more quality time in your kitchen to create your own wonderful memories. The kitchen has always been a place of inspiration for me, not only while I was growing up in New Brunswick, on the east coast of Canada, but also since moving west to beautiful Vancouver Island, British Columbia after I married. I live on five acres near the ocean with my husband, and youngest son. Our two other sons live nearby. My eldest married a while ago, so I have also gained a daughter-in law. I’m sure that “Otto”, my loveable German shorthaired pointer, would be upset if I didn’t mention him as well!!
I certainly never expected to have my own food blog, but here it is, after a lot of help from my son Malcolm. I would like to sincerely thank him for all his patience with his mother and his advanced computer skills.
I have been baking and cooking most of my life, but many of my recipes had never been put down in writing. This blog is a way of forcing me to make a record of them. I never thought much about it until the day that one of my sons asked me for my potato salad recipe. Of course, the recipe was all in my memory. I had learned to make the salad from watching my own mother make it (you know a little bit of this and a dash of that) when I was growing up. I had never written it down. Creating this blog has given me a fun way to preserve my favourite recipes, and a whole new creative outlet.
I bring to Debbie’s Dish a little of the East Coast, where family traditions have existed for generations, and where recipes are valued and carefully passed down, and a little of the West Coast, with its more contemporary approach to food. You’ll soon discover that there’s something here for everyone, and that my recipes are simple, straightforward and good. Some even come with their own original story, which I hope will bring a smile to your face and brighten your day!
