Ottawa Mule is my Canadian take on the classic Moscow Mule, the cocktail with vodka, ginger beer and lime made popular in the 1940’s. My Canadian version replaces the vodka with our very own exceptional Canadian Whisky and uses an alcoholic brewed Ginger Beer from the U.K. for an extra kick. It’s smooth, spicy and delicious!
My sister lives in the United States and is the one who created this drink, no doubt when she was feeling a bit homesick. Added to the Canadian Whisky, she chose “Crabbie’s Original Alcoholic Ginger Beer” as the main ingredient for the cocktail. Crabbie’s, from Edinburg, is a company that has been in business since 1801, so it knows what it takes to get the right amount of ginger and spice, with the added plus of being 4 percent alcohol. The combination of the two is perfect!
For a less potent drink, use any quality non-alcoholic ginger beer instead of Crabbie’s.
Moscow Mules are traditionally served in a copper mug or highball glass, however, I chose to showcase the cocktail in a vintage pressed glass that is over a hundred years old and was my grandparents, as are the checkers shown in the photos.
Ottawa Mule is a great tasting drink, served over ice and a wedge of lime. Sit back, relax, you deserve it! Just don’t overindulge!
